Welding Rods


In technical terms, welding rods are commonly known as filler metals. A welding rod is a metal that is used in the process of welding to fill a joint that has to be fixed. The process of welding is typically done by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material, which is often a welding rod, to form a pool of molten material that cools to become a strong joint.

Welding rods are also known as electrodes. They usually come in four types, which include covered welding rods used in metal arc welding. The welding rod coating mainly contains compounds such as rutile, calcium fluoride, cellulose, and iron powder. Rutile-coated rods give a good appearance to the weld and produce a good quality weld. Even stainless steel rods or electrodes are used extensively to weld steel work pieces with carbon steel work pieces.
On the other hand, bare welding electrodes are used in gas metal arc work. These electrodes contain various deoxidizing metals such as silicon, manganese, titanium, and aluminum, which help in preventing oxygen porosity. In addition, they also contain denitriding metals such as titanium and zirconium to avoid nitrogen porosity. These rods are typically available in diameters ranging from 0.7 mm to 2.4 mm. However, the diameter is greatly determined by the type of metal and the application. These welding electrodes are also used for gas tungsten arc welding.

Tubular welding rods, which are in a wired form, are used in flux-cored arc welding. These rods contain the alloys of mild and low alloy steel, stainless steel, and high nickel. Some are even made from wear-facing or surfacing alloys.

Welding fluxes are used in the process of submerged arc welding, where the process requires continuous supply of solid and tubular welding rods.

Furthermore, welding rods or electrodes can also be divided as "fast-fill" electrodes. These are designed and characterized to melt quickly, whereas the "fast freeze" welding rods are designed to solidify quickly. The intermediate electrodes are categorized as "fill-freeze" or "fast-follow" electrodes.

Using the proper welding rod is very crucial in the welding process as it is the chief factor that determines the nature of the joint.

Selecting A Low Cost 120V Welder For Home Use


Most homeowners have certain standard tools for repair of household items, and a welder just wouldn’t be on that list of what is “typical”. Considering my experiences, I think a lot of homeowners should re-think that standard. Several years ago I bought a small 120 volt arc welder to fabricate parts for my 1936 Chevy Pick up. In spite of the fact that the cost was fairly affordable when I bought this welder to work on my hot rod pick up, I still wondered whether it would really be worth the expense. I had never owned or used a welder and I just didn’t know much about such things. Boy was I surprised - What a great idea it turned out to be!

Sure, it did just what I expected in fabricating parts for my truck, but it has also helped me fix and repair dozens of things around the house. As an example, my wife had an old coat rack that was made of wood and cast iron – it originally belonged to her great grandmother, but the iron part had cracked and broken. I took it to a guy to fix it, and he wanted $300. I thought it was crazy to spend that kind of money, so I bought about $5 worth arc welding rod specially made for cast iron, a can of flat black paint and fixed it myself. A few weeks later the handle on my workshop vise broke – I would have had to throw it away, but with a bit of welding, and its as good as new. From my camp trailer, to hand tools, broken stuff for the family and friends – I’ve used my welder a hundred times.

That’s why I recommend purchasing one so freely. I’ve easily saved enough money to pay for the cost of my welder many times over. So many things around the house that I would have had to just throw away are practically good as new. Home workshop, arts and crafts, automotive repairs – all are applications that I've used home welder to work on. It just opened a whole new world of potential projects I could complete. I admit I’m kind of a tool junkie, but a welder is just something that most homeowners wouldn’t think of.

Different types of welding equipment are available, some are powered by 220V wall power, some welders have their own generator to create their power. Different technologies include Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welders which feed a continuous wire into the welder, and use a flow of argon gas to keep the metal from burning or oxidizing too quickly. TIG welders (Tungsten Inert Gas) use a non consumable tungsten electrode and a bare uncoated hand held welding rod.
The type of welder I recommend for home use is a simple stick electrode - arc welding set up, which uses a rod covered in a flux to weld and can be plugged right into a standard wall outlet. During welding with this type of equipment, the vaporizing flux protects the metal. The arc is very high temperature and the metal virtually sprays off the end of the rod. The flux on the rod which does not vaporize, fuses into a molten glass which protects the metal from oxidation while it is cooling.

For the average home owner, a simple 120V unit, is probably best. No special modification to provide 220 V power is necessary, and the price is quite reasonable (I paid about $150 for mine).. The 120V unit is only good to weld up to about 3/16 inch steel. If you are doing heavy duty welding and heavy fabrication, you need a larger unit. However for 99% of the typical homeowner applications, I find the 120V unit is really sufficient. There are low cost MIG units that can run on 115V home power available for slightly more than the stick type arc welding units, but with MIG you also need a cylinder of compressed Argon to provide the inert gas, and that adds to the price a bit.

Welding supplies are available locally in most areas. These are the shops where you can purchase different types of welding rod (you can only use small diameter rod with a 120V unit). Different types of rods (or wire for MIG type units) are used for welding on different types of steel or iron. I also bought an upgraded welding mask at my local welding supply shop.
Anyway, I consider my little home arc welder one of the best purchases that I have ever made and I heartily recommend it to other homeowners. I’m not a welding equipment dealer, but I like my tools and this has been a good one to own, not to mention that the cost was very affordable. If you want to consider fabricating home metal craft projects, doing home and auto repairs, metal arts and other similar types of projects, I really think that it is a very worthwhile purchase. I know I wouldn't be without one.

Checklist for Buying a Welder


Purchasing a welder can be somewhat confusing if you don’t have all of the information that you need at your fingertips. Before you decide to buy a welder, consider the questions listed below. Only then will you be a well-informed consumer, who is able to answer, “Exactly what type of welder do I need?”

What size welder do you need to buy?

The size of a welder depends on how much amperage a welder can generate while it is being used. The number of minutes per ten minute cycle that a welder operates is called a duty cycle. Keep in mind that different types of metals require different types of amperage. The harder and thicker the material, the more amperage is needed.

That being said, it is obvious that the size welder you need depends on the type of work that you will be using the welder to do. For example, if you will only be performing light repair jobs on materials such as steel and aluminum, you would only need a 150-amp MIG welding unit. This welder would only require a 30 percent duty cycle. On the other hand, if you are using a welder for repair and fabrication work, you would be better off with at least at 200-amp MIG welder that has a minimum 40 percent duty cycle.

How much portability do you need your welder to have?

When buying a welder, you must ask yourself if you need the welder to be portable. If you do want a portable welder, you also must keep in mind that you will need to have the power available to use it wherever you decide to transport it. Most portable welders are small, and many can operate on 115V of power (which can be found in a home). Portable welders can be very nice to have, as you can bring your welder to the job, instead of always bringing the job to your welder.

What type of welder quality is important to you?

Have you ever heard the saying, “You get what you pay for”? This holds true for welders. If you purchase a high-quality welder, chances are that it will last for years and years. Welders are designed to last and take a beating. If you want the best welders possible, your best bet is to shop in a welding supply store. In a welding supply store, you will be able to ask professionals their opinions and get the latest and greatest updates on welding.

Welding Equipment


In an industrial context, welding refers to a fabrication process that joins materials such as metals and thermoplastics, by causing coalescence. This is typically done by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material such as a welding rod, to form a pool of molten material that cools to become a strong joint. Various processes and energy sources are used for welding such as a gas flame, electric arc, laser, electric beam, friction, and ultra sound. All these methods involve the use of various unique equipments, specific to each process.

A basic welding process requires certain common equipments. These include the power supply, electrodes, welding rods and arcs, and shielding gas. The process of automated welding employs the use of robots.

A welding power supply is equipment that supplies an electrical current to perform the welding operation and often uses a high current, usually over 80 amps. The current can be as high as 12000 amps, which is required for spot welding. Power supply equipment includes a transformer, generator, and alternator and inverter. Generator and alternator stylized machines convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, a transformer based welding structure is often expensive but can assist in a variety of applications.

Electrodes or filler materials are one of the most vital components in welding as they facilitate the intended joint. However, depending on the process, the electrode is either consumable, in case of gas metal artwork, or non-consumable as in case of tungsten arc welding. Filler materials are also available in different materials such as magnesium and tungsten.

The shielding gas is used mainly in gas metal arc work to protect the weld area from atmospheric gases. Robots have become crucial equipment in modern welding process as it facilitates automated welding, thus increasing the efficiency and enhancing various welding processes.
